110 years ago (1907)
Police department records for
the past six months show a total
of 289 arrests. Of these, 142 were
purely perfunctory proceedings,
the complaint alleging that the
prisoners were guilty either of
keeping or being inmates of bawdy
houses. The others include 82
drunk and disorderly arrests, 27
for operation of slot machines, 14
for assault and battery, eight for
discharging firearms in the city
limits and two under the misdemeanor
heading.
A forest fire on the hill immediately
behind Port Discovery and
not far removed from the sawmill
plant located there has passed
beyond control and must be left
to burn itself out.
90 years ago (1927)
Jefferson County is now officially
assured of one of the finest
state park developments in the
state with the approval of Fort
Townsend as a state tourist recreation
park.
“The stage is almost set for
the formal groundbreaking
ceremony marking the inauguration
of construction work on the
Port Townsend Municipal Golf
Club course on the Hastings Field
tract.”
80 years ago (1937)
Four residents of Port Townsend
and one from Port Ludlow graduate
from the University of Washington,
and one Port Townsend man
graduates from Washington State
College.
60 years ago (1957)
This area will become the center
of Pacific Northwest yachting activity
Saturday with the arrival of an
estimated 20 sailing craft of all
classes for six days of racing in Port
Townsend Bay and adjacent waters
of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The
Hudson yacht basin is headquarters
for the regatta, and the port
made extra improvements to better
host the boats.
W.E. Harms, operator of
the Guilford Packing Co. here,
announced the cannery will start
the customary canning of salmon
on Monday, July 1.
35 years ago (1982)
The leader on the Port
Townsend Salmon Club’s monthly
prize ladder is Jim Rondeau, with
the 53-pound, 10-ounce king he
caught while trolling with herring
off Point Wilson on June 10.
“The Port of Port Townsend
Commission has approved preparation
of a lease that would allow
use of the port’s property between
Sims Way and Kah Tai Lagoon by
the City of Port Townsend for a
park.” Commissioner Herb Beck is
the lone nay vote, not ready to give
away a $275,000 piece of property.
Commissioner Bob Porter notes the
property exists only because it was
the cheapest place to put the spoils
from dredging the boat haven and
says he favors a 30-year lease at
$1 a year.
