100 years ago this week (1918)

“Both of Port Townsend’s banking houses are now members of the federal reserve.”

“The scarcity of sailors shows no signs of abatement, the vessels in port not being able to get enough hands to permit them departing. The schooner Robert E. Hind has been short a couple of men but of those on board the percentage of certified seamen is under the legal limit, so permission has been asked from Washington to permit the vessel clearing with non-certified men.”

“The launch Rothschild & Co. was hauled out at the Madison Street ways yesterday afternoon and repairs will be begun immediately.

The launch was damaged Monday by the steamer Puget, when a mistaken engine room signal resulted in the steamer making a dash ahead instead of backing away from the dock.”

60 years ago this week (1958)

Zilpha B. Davis, a Port Townsend housewife prominent in a wide variety of community betterment activities, is named 1957 Citizen of the Year.

Digging in the vicinity of the old drained swamp (formerly known as the Chinese Gardens) near the county fairgrounds has resulted in a sort of cold war involving a number of nearby residents who now have drainage problems.

“Brinnon Girl Scout Leader Jean Phillips and Brownie Leader Ruth Mueller traveled to Port Townsend together Monday evening to attend a leaders’ meeting at the Girl Scout Little House.”

30 years ago this week (1988)

The owners of a house in Gardiner that burned from an apparent chimney fire are angry that it took volunteer firefighters 16 minutes to reach the blaze.

Restaurants advertising in The Leader this week include: Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, Silver Palace Chinese Restaurant, China Restaurant, La Fonda Mexican Restaurant, Ajax Cafe, Landfall Restaurant, Sea J’s Cafe, Port Ludlow Harbormaster Restaurant, Discovery Bay Restaurant and the Sea Galley.

For rent: Studio cottage with loft and character, in quiet location, $250. Three-bedroom, one-bath, in town, unfurnished, $450, furnished, $500 a month. Large, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath Uptown Victorian, insulated and remodeled, $600 a month, lease. Sunny new two-bedroom house with washer and dryer, including water and sewer, $400 month. Two-bedroom new house, sunny location near Fort Worden, including some utilities, $380.
