“Chief of Police Somers is still busy with his little poll tax book, and yesterday he reported that 143 citizens of Port Townsend have listened to his siren’s song and contributed $2 per, in preference to residing for a short time in the Hotel de Somers.”
80 years ago this week (1937)
Carl Hane of Olympic Hardware Furniture Co. announced yesterday that Cecil Guptill is still leading in the store’s fish contest with his 39-pound, 2-ounce salmon caught July 13.
“In what was no doubt a highly spirited battle off Marrowstone Point Sunday, Vernon Swanson, young son of Mr. and Mrs. Axel Swanson, was the winner, and for evidence of his skill he displayed a 33-pound, 8-ounce king salmon at Heath’s store Monday morning.”
60 years ago this week (1957)
Nels Kjellin is in his 12th year as instructor for the public swimming class staged at Neville Beach on Discovery Bay. He takes his vacation from the paper mill so he can teach lessons.
“Boat thieves have been active here recently, with three craft having been stolen, two from the Port Townsend Boat Haven and one at Shine.”
Gael Stuart, chairman of the Civic Affairs Committee at the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce, leads a public preference ballot to combine annual fund drives into a United Good Neighbors fund drive that would be used to benefit many programs and people.
“To Manresa Hall in Port Townsend have come 30 young priests for a year of study. They hail from all corners of the U.S., from Alaska, Japan, the Philippine Islands, South America and eastern Europe, representing seven provinces of the Society of Jesus.”
The high temperature in Port Townsend for the month of July was 83 degrees on July 19, with a low of 48 on July 4. There were 1.15 inches of measurable precipitation.
Renovation of Grant Street Elementary School into a 12-room school is nearing completion.
