100 years ago (1917)

“All residents of Eastern Jefferson County who have a surplus of vegetable and garden seed to sell are requested to immediately notify Tom W. Holman, secretary of the county and planning committee.”

The charter for the Port Townsend chapter of the Red Cross Society has arrived, and the branch is to be organized at a meeting at the Central School.

60 years ago (1957)

“State Highways Director W.A. Bugge announced the Army Corps of Engineers have issued the State a permit to construct the bridge across Hood Canal.”

“A lack of adequate housing facilities in Port Townsend is providing a detriment to efforts of Crown Zellerbach to attract new technical personnel,” the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce is told.

“The abandoned Port Townsend Army garrison [Fort Worden], already being surveyed for conversion, will be able to handle many more boys for the eight-week period as compared to six weeks or less at the overtaxed Green Hill facility” operated by the state Department of Institutions.

“A chapter on human sexuality in a health education textbook used in a sophomore class at Port Townsend High School has ignited an outcry from a group of parents who want the book removed as instructional material.”

20 years ago (1997)

“After months of discussion and citing a growing fear of decreasing planning options, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners last Thursday imposed a 90-day ban on new subdivisions.”

“The American Legion post in Port Townsend has been renamed to honor Marvin G. Shields, a Jefferson County man who posthumously was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Vietnam War.” There are 179 American Legion posts in Washington state, and it appears that as of 1997, Post No. 26 is the only one named for a Vietnam War veteran.

“Marina X is the title given to the Port of Port Townsend’s long-term plan to develop additional moorage at or near the Port Townsend Boat Haven.”

The new Union Wharf reopens to the public.

East Jefferson Little League fields 27 teams for its opening-day jamboree.
