Winds put boaters in distress; unattended schooner blown into breakwater

Sailboats were blown off course and onto shore when a windstorm rolled across Admiralty Inlet on Friday, Oct. 9. There were no reported injuries.

A 60-foot schooner left unattended while anchored not far outside the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven was dislodged, and blown against the rock breakwater. The boat’s hull, made of Ferrocement, was holed. Vessel Assist was contracted to make emergency repairs to the Phoenix, which had recently emerged from the boat yard here.

While the big boat had been blown loose, a sailboat underway in Admiralty Inlet needed help.

JEFFCOM 911 received notice at about 10:15 a.m. of a sailboat in distress and shooting off flares about one mile north of the Marrowstone Point lighthouse at Fort Flagler State Park, according to Bill Beezley, spokesperson at East Jefferson Fire Rescue.

The approximate 25-foot white sailboat had lost its foresail amid stiff wind and three-foot waves and the two occupants on board feared capsizing, according to EJFR.

The U.S. Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from Port Angeles and East Jefferson Fire Rescue Marine 16 and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Marine 1 also responded.

While the Coast Guard helicopter took up station nearby, Marine 16 made contact with the occupants of the sailboat and secured their vessel until Vessel Assist could respond for a tow.

Once on scene, Vessel Assist took the sailboat with occupants under tow into Port Townsend Bay and the Port Townsend Boat Haven.
