A Swansonville man pleaded not guilty Aug. 26 after allegedly shooting and injuring an Oregon man and his dog.

Dean J. Carlson, 58, faces second-degree assault and first-degree animal cruelty charges. His trial is set for Oct. 31-Nov. 1. He is next due in court Sept. 30.

Carlson, who has no criminal history, was arrested Aug. 21 at his home on Reuben Johnson Road after allegedly shooting Gregory L. Rodvelt, 64, of Metolius, Oregon. Rodvelt was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder, according to Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Detective Shane Stevenson's incident report.

Rodvelt's Rottweiler, which also sustained a gunshot wound, was transported to a veterinary hospital in Poulsbo. Both Rodvelt and his dog were expected to recover from their injuries, prosecutors said.

Jefferson County Superior Court Judge Keith Harper set Carlson's bond at $25,000 on Aug. 22 and ordered him to stay away from Rodvelt and surrender any firearms.

Carlson posted that bond Aug. 25 and returned home to find his firearms missing, said defense attorney Bret Roberts, adding that Carlson's home may have been ransacked or sheriff's deputies may have taken them as evidence.

“We just don't know where the firearms are at and we're following up with that,” Roberts said.

The shooting came a day after Rodvelt – reportedly an old friend whom Carlson had not seen in 20 years – had reportedly punched Carlson in the eye and threatened to steal his vehicle while the two shot firearms and drank alcohol in the forest west of Brinnon.

Once back at his Swansonville home Aug. 20, Carlson reportedly told Rodvelt to leave, which he did, returning again the next day, Aug. 21. Carlson reportedly again told Rodvelt to leave, which he did, only to return later that day.

Upon Rodvelt's return, Carlson grabbed his 12-gauge shotgun and again told Rodvelt to leave, according to the report. Rodvelt and his dog began walking toward Carlson, and Carlson fired his gun in their general direction, according to the report. Carlson said Rodvelt and the dog kept walking toward him, so he fired again, according to the report.

After the second shot, Rodvelt and his dog ran to a neighbor's property. Carlson proceeded to pour himself some gin in a Gatorade bottle and wait for law enforcement, according to the report. Carlson was arrested at 5:42 p.m.; his blood alcohol level at 7:09 p.m. was 0.197, according to the report.

Carlson told police he wanted to scare Rodvelt, not shoot him, according to Stevenson's report.

At 11:24 p.m., Aug. 21, Rodvelt called the sheriff's office from Harborview and told Stevenson he had been shot in the shoulder while trying to take cover behind a nearby refrigerator, according to the report. After hearing a second gunshot and the sound of his dog yelping, Rodvelt said, he was in fear for his life and ran away, according to the report.
