A chain-reaction rear-end accident Feb. 10 in Kitsap County involving four vehicles was apparently caused by a Port Ludlow motorist temporarily blinded by the sun.
According to the Washington State Patrol, about 2:16 p.m. Feb. 10, John J. Gilmour, 87, of Port Ludlow was driving a dark green 1995 Toyota Rav4 westbound (toward Jefferson County) on State Route 104 approaching stopped traffic at the Hansville Road intersection's traffic signal.
Gilmour was apparently blinded by the sun, lowered his car's sun visor, observed the traffic already stopped in front of him at the light, and was unable to stop. The Toyota struck a blue 1996 Chevrolet Metro two-door driven by Anissa M. Zichella, 45, of Port Angeles. The collision forced the Chevy Metro into the rear end of a white 2008 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Christina R. Sharkey, 57, of Bremerton. The Chevy Blazer then went forward into the rear of a white 2006 Ford F150 pickup driven by Thomas H. Niicol, 62, of Poulsbo.
According to the Washington State Patrol, all four drivers were wearing safety restraints. Zichella, Sharkey and Nicol were all transported to Harrison Hospital in Silverdale by aid car. Also transported was a passenger in Nicol's Ford, Kevin N. Auld, 11, of Port Angeles, who had also worn a safety restraint.
The Ford pickup was driven from the scene; the other four vehicles were towed.
The accident's cause was Gilmour driving too fast for conditions. The citation is pending, according to the Washington State Patrol on Feb. 10.
