A bicyclist on the Larry Scott Memorial Trail called 911 on the morning of March 7 to report that a man with a baseball bat had tried to strike her.

According to a probable-cause report from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Aliyu Mohabo Boughton was arrested at 8:50 a.m. that morning on counts of attempted assault in the second degree and possession of a dangerous weapon, and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. Boughton remained in jail on Tuesday, March 13.

JeffCom received a call at 8:43 a.m. from a woman claiming she’d been attacked on the Larry Scott Trail, near Nelson’s Landing Road, by a man whom she said had swung a baseball bat at her while she was riding her bicycle, the report said.

The woman described the suspect as a dark-skinned black man wearing a red jacket, whom she said she last saw heading toward Port Townsend on the trail, coming from Nelson’s Landing.

According to the report, sheriff’s personnel located the suspect walking northbound on the trail, between State Route 20 and Discovery Road, carrying an orange baseball bat.

“The man was taken into custody for the attempted assault and identified as Mohabo Boughton,” read the report.

According to the report, a search conducted concurrent to his arrest found an 8-inch fixed-blade knife tucked into his belt, but when he was questioned, the report stated that Boughton said only, “You are arresting me because I’m a black man.”

The Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office has declined comment on this case.
