UPDATED 1 p.m. Sept. 18
A 65-foot pleasure craft that ran aground while under tow toward Pleasant Harbor Marina in Hood Canal south of Brinnon was still in the water as of noon Sept. 16.
The craft has spilled an estimated 25 to 30 gallons of diesel, according to Krista Carlile of the Pleasant Harbor Marina.
The incident was reported about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, according to a U.S. Coast Guard press release. The vessel is across the bay from the marina and is within 30 feet of the nearest shore, which is privately owned, Carlile said.
An estimated 500 gallons of diesel fuel were aboard the vessel and an unrecoverable sheen was reported to be visible as of daylight Sunday. "You can still see streaks in the water," Carlile said Tuesday morning.
A containment boom was deployed around the vessel and the remaining fuel onboard was pumped out, Carlile said. "The smell [of diesel] was just horrible the last couple days," Carlile said. Other employees at Pleasant Harbor Marina reported having headaches from the smell on Monday.
Jefferson County dispatch notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound that the 65-foot pleasure craft Avalon was aground in Pleasant Harbor at 2:30 a.m. The vessel was under tow by a 14-foot skiff.
All four people involved departed the 65-foot vessel and made it ashore in the skiff.
Members from Sector Puget Sound’s Incident Management Division along with the Washington State Department of Ecology, Global Diving and Salvage and the Brinnon Fire Department responded.
