Fire destroys shop on Marrowstone Island; no injuries

A fast-moving fire destroyed a detached shop on Marrowstone Island Wednesday afternoon. There were no injuries, according to East Jefferson Fire Rescue.

EJFR was dispatched to the fire in the 1500 block of Griffith Point Road at 4:13 p.m., Oct. 12 after a neighbor noticed smoke billowing from the building and notified homeowners.

Firefighters arrived to find the 1,200-square-foot shop completely engulfed in flames and began efforts to knock down the fire while protecting nearby structures and trees, according to Bill Beezley, EJFR public information officer. Their efforts were hampered by a lack of fire hydrants on the road. Water was supplied from engines and two water tenders.

The fire was declared out at 5:08 p.m. but not before the building was destroyed.

According to the homeowner, he had lit a fire in a wood-burning stove in the shop earlier in the day but believed he had extinguished it. The shop contained a significant amount of wood as well as a number of large power tools.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not believed to be suspicious, according to EJFR.

About 22 firefighters from EJFR, Engine 91 from Naval Magazine Indian Island, Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue and Jefferson County Fire District 5 (Discovery Bay) responded.
