An outbuilding on Rainshadow Drive with a small therapy pool was heavily damaged by fire Monday, March 30.
The building's owner, who had just returned to the home in western Port Townsend outside the city limits, saw smoke rising from the outbuilding, and contacted East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR) around 2:39 p.m. By the time firefighters arrived, about seven minutes later, flames were spreading across the outbuilding's roof. Firefighters immediately began a transitional attack, and had the fire knocked down within a few minutes, but not before the building sustained significant damage, according to a press release from Bill Beezley, EJFR information officer.
The fire was extinguished before spreading to the adjacent house.
According to the owner, the pool building was 12-14 years old and was roughly 400 square feet in size.
The fire investigation task force are investigating the cause of the blaze; initial reports indicate the fire may have originated with an external propane water heater at one corner of the building.
Ten firefighters from EJFR were assisted on the call by an engine company from Naval Magazine Indian Island.
