With an estimated 55 ballots left to count, results from the Nov. 8 election aren’t expected to change before the election is certified Nov. 29.
Kate Dean has won a seat on the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners, and Jeff Randall has unseated incumbent Barney Burke for a seat on the Jefferson County Public Utility District board.
At last count, 85.45 percent of registered voters in Jefferson County turned out to vote. San Juan County beat Jefferson for turnout honors, with 86.62 percent of registered voters there casting ballots.
The vote tally as of Nov. 14 shows Dean with 11,818 votes and Tim Thomas with 6,054 votes. Dean’s election to succeed the retiring Phil Johnson as District 1 commissioner seats two women (Dean joins Kathleen Kler, District 3) on the three-member board for the first time in the county’s history.
For PUD commissioner, Randall now has 9,961 votes to Burke’s 6,099 votes.
BRINNON PARKS
In Brinnon, voters rejected the Jefferson County Park and Recreation District 2’s first request for a property tax levy to support the entity, which voters approved in 2012. The updated “no” vote total of 423 is more than the “yes” votes of 355. The proposed six-year property tax levy of 5 cents per $1,000 of assessed value required voter approval of 60 percent. The levy is expected to raise $15,000 to support the district’s administrative functions.
OTHER RACES
For president, it was no surprise that Jefferson County went for Hillary Clinton with 12,556 votes, compared to Donald Trump with 5,986 votes.
For governor, the county went for incumbent Jay Inslee with 13,295, compared to 6,987 for Republican Bill Bryant.
For the 6th Congressional District, Jefferson County favored Democrat Derek Kilmer with 14,001 votes, compared to Republican Todd Bloom with 5,923 votes.
In the 24th Legislative District races, all three Democrats won in the three-county race. Jefferson County voters favored Kevin Van de Wege with 12,919 votes over Danille Turissini with 6,590 votes; and for representative, they backed Mike Chapman with 13,582 votes over George Vrable at 5,755; and voters supported incumbent Steve Tharinger with 13,206 votes over John Alger with 6,042 votes.
