The new commissioner for District 3 of the Jefferson County Public Utility District was up in the air on election night.
Dan Toepper received 7,615 votes, or 50.02 percent of the vote, while Tom Brotherton received 7,610 votes, or 49.98 percent of the vote.
The Jefferson County Auditor’s Office deemed the race too close to call, with Auditor Rose Anne Carroll telling the public there was “at least a day” of ballots left to count.
Regardless of the outcome, Toepper touted the efforts of his supporters.
"We worked hard the last week, doing a lot of sign waving and looking at who had returned ballots, (while) getting some phone calls out with limited staff.”
Toepper said he hoped he would get enough votes to win.
"I am optimistic," he said. "We will just have to see how they fall. We will make a few more calls. There are the challenged ballots as well, so we will take a look at that list, and see what’s going on with that, and fight for every vote that is out there.”
Brotherton said he will wait and see.
"I haven't won or lost yet," he said. "I'm encouraged and thankful to have the support of so many folks, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed."
