Primary races take shape: Some seats have no takers; special filing period set

While there are contested primary races for a seat on the Jefferson County Public Hospital District 2 and a seat on the Chimacum School Board, apparently no one wants any of the five seats open on the Brinnon Parks and Recreation Board since no one signed up during filing week.

Jefferson County elections official Betty Johnson said Monday that there is to be another chance for anyone interested in those unfilled seats, as well as a seat on the Brinnon School Board that incumbent Valerie Schindler did not file to retain, and a seat on the Paradise Bay Water Board Pos. 1.

“I believe everybody was aware that last week was filing week,” Johnson said.

But for those who may have missed it, there is to be an extended three-day filing period May 30-June 1. Candidates can go to the Auditor’s Office at the Jefferson County Courthouse during normal office, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., on those days or file online between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the same days, Johnson said.

In the meantime, a three-way race between Bruce J. McComas, Bernie Donanberg and Cheri Van Hoover is shaping up for a seat on the hospital board being vacated by Commissioner Tony DeLeo, who held the position for more than 40 years. An Aug. 1 primary race is set to narrow the field to two candidates.

In the Chimacum School District, Jack McKay and Jared Shepherd of Port Ludlow filed for a seat, along with Wilma L. Hackman of Port Hadlock. Incumbent Kevin Miller did not seek the four-year position.

Cost of the primary election is to be borne by the districts with races on the ballot. Johnson estimated the cost at about $40,000, with the hospital district paying more than the school district because the hospital race is countywide and has more voters, she said. The school board race has fewer voters.

There also is a three-way race for a seat on the Clallam-Jefferson Fire Protection District 3, which includes a few voters in Jefferson County. So that race also would be on a handful of ballots in Jefferson County, and that district also would need to chip in to pay for the primary race.

When more than two people file for office, the field is narrowed to two candidates in the primary election.

There are other contested races this year, including for two seats on the Port of Port Townsend Commission, for which incumbent Brad Clinefelter is being challenged by Bill Putney, and incumbent Peter W. Hanke is being challenged by Keith Beck.

Ron Riggle has filed for a seat on the Chimacum School District board, along with incumbent Sarah Martin. For the Quilcene Fire Rescue, incumbent Art Frank is being challenged by Wayne Siscoe.

Others who filed last week are:

City of Port Townsend: Michelle Sandoval filed to keep her Pos. 1 seat on the City Council; Ariel J. Speser filed for the Pos. 2 seat and so is elected to the seat that had been held by Catharine Robinson; Pamela Adams, incumbent filed to keep her Pos. 5 seat.

Brinnon School District: Pos. 1 is vacant; Pos. 5, Shirley Towne

Quilcene School District: Pos. 2, Cindy Pollard, incumbent; Pos. 4, Paul Mahan, incumbent; Pos. 5, Shona Davis
