Jefferson Healthcare Commission candidate Cheri Van Hoover recently returned a $100 donation made online to her campaign by current hospital board Commissioner Kees Kolff.

“I can’t thank you enough for the kindness you have shown to me and for your support for my campaign,” Van Hoover wrote in a letter dated May 7.

“As you know, rumors have spread through some parts of the community impugning my independence and alleging that you will have excess influence over my positions if I am elected to the board,” she told Kolff in that letter.

“Although both you and I know this to be entirely false, it is important that I take care to avoid any hint of impropriety or obligation,” she wrote.

“For this reason, I feel it is necessary to return your very generous and much-appreciated donation to my campaign,” she said of sending Kolff a check for $100.

The Leader asked for a copy of the letter from Van Hoover, and she sent it last week.

Van Hoover and Bruce McComas are vying for the nonpartisan Pos. 1 seat on the board, which is being vacated by incumbent Tony DeLeo, who has held the position for 44 years.

Van Hoover listed the refund on information filed with the state Public Disclosure Commission (PDC).
