ELECTION: Hospital race most expensive in a decade

Posted

Bruce McComas and Cheri Van Hoover are vying for what is now the most expensive seat on the Jefferson Healthcare board of commissioners in a decade.

The two candidates for the Jefferson Healthcare hospital commission have raised almost $40,000 combined in their bids to win a seat.

The second-most-expensive race was in 2015 when current hospital Commissioner Kees Kolff raised $10,245 against incumbent Commissioner Chuck Russell, who opted to raise less than $5,000. Kolff won.

Of the $40,000 raised this year by McComas and Van Hoover, almost $10,000 is money each has loaned their own campaigns, according to campaign financing information they have filed with the state Public Disclosure Commission (PDC).

As of Oct. 26, McComas reported cash contributions of $13,515 and in-kind donations of $3,698; he has loaned his campaign $4,000. He has itemized expenditures of $17,223.

Van Hoover reported $25,801 in cash contributions and $814 in in-kind contributions. Van Hoover loaned her campaign $5,000, and Kathleen Taylor loaned Van Hoover $2,000, according PDC records. She had itemized expenditures of $24,853 and nonitemized expenditures of $649.

McComas’ two top individual contributors are Richard Jahnke, who donated $1,360.01, and Deborah Jahnke, who donated $1,359.96. McComas also listed $810 in small contributions.

Van Hoover’s top two individual contributors are her daughter, Zoe Van Hoover, who donated $1,250, and Leslie Payton, who donated $1,169.71, according to the PDC. Van Hoover also listed $1,551.50 in small contributions, making that the largest line-item contribution on the list.
