Scholarships offered to women, Peninsula College students

Deadline for Women’s Foundation scholarships March 10

The University Women’s Foundation (UWF) of Jefferson County, the philanthropic affiliate of AAUW Port Townsend, is offering more than $50,000 in scholarships this spring to women of East Jefferson County.

Applications are due March 10, finalists are interviewed in April, and awards are announced in May.

The UWF is offering the following scholarships and awards for 2018-19:

The Elmira K. Beyer Endowed Scholarship, in the amount of $11,000, is to be awarded to an East Jefferson County woman who has completed at least one year of university study and wishes to continue her education.

The Academic Endowed Scholarship, in the amount of $8,500, is offered based on criteria related to academic performance, financial need, and educational and professional goals.

New this year are two awards of $7,000 each, which are to be given in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Port Townsend branch of AAUW.

Also new is an award of $2,500, given in memory of Constance Anna Pash to a woman pursuing a STEM degree with an emphasis on math.

The UWF Environmental Scholarship of $3,000 is presented to a Jefferson County woman who plans to study environmental science with an interest in climate change. The Lisa T. Painter Scholarship, in the amount of $2,500, is offered to a woman who wishes to study law, medicine/health care or fine arts.

Three scholarships of $2,500 each are to be given to young women graduating this year from Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene high schools and going on to college.

Nine STEM awards of $100 each are presented to female high school students from Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene who excel in science, technology, engineering and math, and have been nominated by their school counselors.

In addition, each year, UWF/AAUW sends several middle school girls to Tech Trek, a weeklong science and math summer camp held on a Washington university campus.

Peninsula College offers scholarship to journalism/multimedia students

Students with a passion for storytelling who are interested in writing, photography and design are encouraged to apply now for Peninsula College’s Webster Scholarship.

Award amounts are dependent upon the student’s enrollment level.

Students can receive as much as $4,500 for an academic year. Individuals must enroll in courses identified by the college for at least five credits to be eligible for the scholarship.

Funding for the Webster Scholarship comes from an endowment established by the late Charles N. Webster, whose family founded local radio station KONP and Peninsula Daily News.
