Six middle-school girls from East Jefferson County attended Tech Trek, a week-long science and math summer camp sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
Emerald Bailey, Olivia Crecca, Veda Dosey, and Lillith Montgomery from Blue Heron Middle School, Madison Coffey from Chimacum Middle School, and Ruby Hudson from Quilcene School District joined other girls from western Washington at Tech Trek camp in July, living in the dorms at Pacific Lutheran University and attending a wide range of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) classes, labs, and field trips.
At Tech Trek, AAUW immerses girls in hands-on STEM activities designed to encourage interest in high-tech, and help them think about themselves as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer technologists – careers in which women are typically underrepresented, according to a press release from AAUW.
During the week, the girls worked alongside female scientists and mathematicians and attended a daily math or science core class of their choice. The class offerings included inventing apps, robotics, physics/ballooning, “clean” chemistry, crime scene investigation, and marine environment biology. The girls also participated in lab sessions including computer programming, and their choice of field trips.
Two of the campers attended the Sept. 19 AAUW meeting and recounted what they appreciated about Tech Trek.
“I liked all the different hands-on activities and meeting women who work in fields that I am interested in,” said Bailey. “I also enjoyed the college campus experience.”
The six girls are now eighth graders, and were nominated this past spring by their math and science teachers, interviewed by members of the local AAUW Port Townsend branch, and selected for camp scholarships. Funding for the scholarships came from the support of individual community members and several businesses, including Active Life Physical Therapy, Air Flo Heating Co., Chimacum Valley Veterinary Hospital, Power Trip Energy Corp., and Peninsula Flooring, as well as AAUW Washington, AAUW National, and the University Women's Foundation of Jefferson County, a nonprofit affiliate of AAUW Port Townsend.
