A driving lesson ended on a soggy note Tuesday evening, May 19 when a couple, their child and their vehicle crashed into the waters of the Port Townsend Boat Haven marina.
None of the vehicle's three occupants were injured, said Bill Beezley, East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR) public information officer.
A 26-year-old Port Townsend man was teaching a 21-year-old woman to drive in his 1990s Chevrolet TrailBlazer when she pulled into a parking space facing the water, just across from Gold Star Marine in the Boat Haven.
The student then mistakenly pressed the gas instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to leap the parking berm, break through a wooden fence and plunge into the water adjacent to the heavy haul out area.
EJFR was toned to a report of an occupied vehicle in the water at 6:46 p.m.
By the time responders arrived, the couple had gathered their 13-month-old child from the car, evacuated and climbed safely to shore. They refused medical assistance.
The scene of the accident was carefully monitored for environmental issues as a crane lifted the vehicle from the water.
