The Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club held a “Strike Three” June 28.

The winners were Diane Sole in first place with a score of 63, Janie Marcus in second with a 69, Sheila Kilmer in third with a 70 and Marianne Ott in fourth with a 71.

The Disco Bay women golfers followed this by playing a round of “Nassau” July 5.

Starla Audette was the winner for 18 holes, with a net score of 65, while Ann Meier was the winner on the front-nine, with a net score of 38, and Wanda Synnestvedt was the winner on the back-nine, with a net score of 35.5.

“Strike Three is scored like a typical stroke play round, only players drop their highest three scores,” club spokeswoman Dee Sweeney said. “The objective of the game is to finish each hole or round in the fewest total strokes.”

Sweeney went on to explain the “Nassau” is a type of bet in golf that is essentially three separate bets.

“Money is wagered on the best scores in the front nine, the back nine and the total 18 holes,” Sweeney said. “The Nassau is one of golf’s most classic and most popular wagers.”

Sweeney elaborated that the winner is determined by factoring in each player’s handicap, for their net score.

And on July 12, 15 women turned out to the Discovery Bay Golf Course to play “Sweet 16.”

“For this game, each player chooses two holes to subtract from her net score,” Sweeney said. “Hence, 16 holes are counted minus handicap.”

The winners included Meier in first place with a net of 54, Synnestvedt in second place with a net of 59, Kilmer and Lynne Pierle tied in third place with a net of 62, and Sweeney and Diane Solie tied in fourth place with a net of 67.

The women’s golf club invites guests to try out either their nine-hole or 18-hole groups, to join in the fun.

The 18-hole group meets Thursday mornings, from now through October, with tee times at 9 a.m. and meetings in the women’s lounge at 8:30 a.m.

The 18-hole group includes players of all skill levels, most of whom have handicaps or are working toward a handicap.

Friendly competition are featured each Thursday, which are optional for any player.

Players pay $2 into a pot, and money is awarded to the winners.

The nine-hole group meets Tuesdays mornings, also from now through October, with tee times at 9:30 a.m. and meeting in the women’s lounge at 9 a.m.

The nine-hole group plays what Sweeney calls “a casual, low-key, non-competitive round,” for those who either:

1. Only want to play nine holes.

2. Feel their game needs a little work before they can join the 18-hole group.

3. Are just beginning.

4. Would like to work toward a handicap.

5. Can’t play on Thursdays.

If a person is interested in joining, contact Lynn Pierle at lpierle@hotmail.com.

“You’ll have a chance to meet all of our friendly women golfers, and learn that playing with a club is mostly about having fun, improving your golf game and meeting people to play golf with,” Sweeney said.
