Disco Bay lady golfers lose to Dungeness club

After a hard-fought, drawn-out battle, the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club  surrendered a championship trophy to the Cedars at Dungeness Ladies Club in a 9-18 loss.

The Discovery Bay club sought to defend its 2017 title as the Home and Home Match Play Champions against the Dungeness club May 15 in Sequim.

“It was an unexpectedly chilly day on the golf course in Sequim, as 17 women ventured out to compete for the annual event,” said Dee Sweeney, publicity chair for the Discovery Bay Women's Golf Club.

According to Sweeney, Discovery Bay tied for the title in 2016 but lost in 2015 and 2014.

“Our team had a full complement of players in 2017, with no injuries,” Sweeney said. “In addition, the event was held in July of last year, giving us more time to practice before the tournament.”

By contrast, this year Sweeney believed her team was hindered by heavy spring rains, which limited how much they were able to get out and practice.

“Also, a few of our Discovery Bay women were unable to play in the event this year, due to injury and family matters,” Sweeney said.

The winning Dungeness team included players Jan Clendening, Cathy Grant, Linda Hash and Kathy Langston with 3 points each; Lori Oakes with 2 1/2 points; Barb Burrows with 2 points; Marine Hirschfeld with 1 point; and Lisa Ballantyne with half of a point.

The Discovery Bay golfers included Jane Peoples with 3 points; Jane Guiltinan with 2 1/2 points; Lynn Pierle with 2 points; Shelley Peterson with 1 point; Dee Sweeney with half of a point; and Katherine Buchanan, Sheila Kilmer, Marianne Ott and Wanda Synnestvedt with zero points each.

Discovery Bay captain Lynn Pierle presented the trophy to Dungeness captain Lisa Ballantyne.

On May 24, the Discovery Bay Women's Golf Club played Blind Nines.

Winners for the nine holes drawn were: Jane Guiltinan, first with a net score of 33.5; Sheila Kilmer, second with a net score of 41; Diane Solie, third with a net score of 41.5; Lynn Pierle and Pat Burns, tied for fourth with net scores of 42.5; and Katherine Buchanan, fifth with a net score of 44.75.
