Is there such a thing as affordable housing in Jefferson County?

The Jefferson County Democrats will focus on this topic during their membership meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St.

Jamie Maciejewski, executive director of Habitat for Humanity for East Jefferson County, and Melinda Szatlocky, executive director of Homeward Bound Community Land Trust, will team up to explain the problems and possibilities surrounding affordable housing in our community.

Until recently, Jefferson County held the unenviable position as the second-worst county in the state in terms of available affordable housing, Maciejewski said. Habitat will be seeking new prospective homeowners – and new volunteers – in the month of March.

Szatlocky advocates focusing on increasing homeownership for below-median-income people who are crucial to our county, such as teachers and firefighters.
