Dr. Muriel Smock (Miller) Severns, a former resident of Port Townsend, Washington, passed away February 15, 2015 following a long decline due to Alzheimer’s disease. Born May 26, 1930 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Muriel earned her Bachelor of Arts, Masters in Education, Ph.D and Master of Divinity degrees. She lived in Illinois, Montana and Washington with her first husband, Marshall, and their family of seven children. Muriel worked in public schools and eventually earned ordination in the United Methodist Church (UMC) in 1993. She served UMC churches in Darrington, Burlington and Davenport, Washington until her retirement in 2000. Widowed in 1999, she remarried in 2002 to Jack Severns, a retired Methodist minister from Montana. Her family said she was a force of nature as a mother, wife, educator, musician and minister. She is survived by three sisters, Faye, Gail and Marjorie; six children, Kim, Apryl, Jaimee, Bayly, Kedron and Todd; and six grandchildren, Andera, Kelly, Sean, Dylan, Lyris and Kedra. Memorials should be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
