Chiropractors give Pollack Volunteer of the Year award

Jordan Pollack of Port Townsend has been named Volunteer of the Year by the 1,000-member Washington State Chiropractic Association (WSCA). The WSCA honored him with the award on Oct. 18 at its annual conference in Seattle.

The award recognizes Pollack for making it possible for the WSCA Sports Council to provide triage and musculoskeletal care for the cyclists in the 200-mile Seattle-to-Portland (STP) Bicycle Classic on July 12-13, 2014. Pollack coordinates a volunteer event medical team that provides first-response medical care for large venues in the Puget Sound region. He was asked to coordinate the STP medical team by longtime fire department comrade Andy Speier of Seattle.

“Andy coordinated 100 bike medics, and I coordinated the medical aid stations. Together, we took on a major challenge to make medical services available for 11,000 riders on the hottest weekend of the summer,” Pollack explained.

“This award is most certainly an honor,” he said. “I’m happy to help bring the Chiropractic Association into the mix with the STP ride, as I feel strongly that these practitioners can bring important skills to the participants in need of care.”

Pollack is fire chief of the Breitenbush Fire Department in Detroit, Oregon, and still manages to be involved in the local Port Townsend community. He helps coordinate the event medical team for the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival and serves on its Festival Committee. He is also a consultant, providing emergency skills training to numerous local businesses.

Pollack developed a sports medical program for the Port Townsend School District, which provides pre- and post-injury screening for athletes and athletic trainers for all school sports. He was also involved in the formation of the Zachary Chambers Foundation for oceanside communities north of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; that foundation is now part of the parent organization Firefighters Crossing Borders (see related story in this edition of the Leader). The program provided lifeguard program development and training, community outreach, hazard signage and more. Pollack is a regional representative for Firefighters Crossing Borders, which brings advanced training, equipment and vehicles to fire departments throughout Mexico desiring assistance.

He is a 1984 graduate of the Evergreen State College in Olympia, and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder from 1976 to 1978.
