The Chimacum girls’ tennis team weathered a week of mixed fortunes, starting with a 5-2 home court win May 1 against the Klahowya Eagles, before being narrowly edged out 4-3 during a May 3 away game against Coupeville.

Chimacum coach Dave Porter praised his players’ “great team effort” against Klahowya, noting that his girls won all four doubles matches and one of the three singles matches.

“We very easily could have won all three singles,” Porter said. “Gladys Hitt had a match point in the second set, but ended up losing a hard-fought three-set match, and Makela Caskey lost a first-set tiebreaker and lost in two sets.”

Porter commended the performance of Chimacum’s first doubles team of Renee Woods and Emma Craighead, who “revenged a poor performance loss earlier in the season” to Klahowya’s first doubles team by scoring what he deemed a “dominating” 6-3, 6-1 win.

“We celebrated our Senior Night, and we all played well,” Porter said. “We swept the three-match series with Klahowya.”

Moving onto Chimacum versus Coupeville, Porter summed up the score simply: “We won all three singles, and they won all four doubles.”

Hitt, Caskey and Woods again stood out as the winners of Chimacum’s singles matches, but the team was missing several players, which Porter believes made the difference between winning and losing.

“We played three tight matches with Coupeville and just came up a little short on this one,” Porter said.

Chimacum returned to Coupeville May 7 for the Olympic 1A League tournament, but the results were unavailable at press time.
