A senior citizen biking with his friends from kindergarten has died from what appears to be a heart attack.
East Jefferson Fire and Rescue was dispatched just after 3 p.m. June 18 on a report of a bicyclist down and CPR being performed.
According to EJFR Public Information Officer Bill Beezley, three Kitsap County men were riding the Larry Scott Trail about a quarter of a mile east of South Discovery Road.
“Two men had pulled ahead when they noticed the third man was no longer behind them,” Beezley said. “They turned around and found him on the ground immediately adjacent to the trail and tangled up in his bicycle. They called 911 and began CPR.”
According to Jefferson County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Julie St. Marie, preliminary results for the 72-year-old man showed he died of natural causes, more than likely he suffered from a heart attack.
CPR was performed for more than an hour on the man, in which St. Marie said was “quite an effort.”
EJFR units were assisted by firefighters from Engine 91 of Naval Magazine Indian Island, ceased CPR at 4:12 p.m. after consulting with a medical doctor.
