Barn, pumphouse burn north of Quilcene

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. At least that was the case for Quilcene Fire Rescue (Jefferson County Fire District 2) which responded to a call at 1:35 p.m. Thursday, July 23 from an unknown caller who “saw smoke in the sky and heard an explosion and a boom,” said Larry Karp, Quilcene fire chief.

Firefighters were expecting a brush fire, but what they found was a barn and pumphouse ablaze at 174 Zion View Lane in Quilcene. The fire was starting to spread to other vegetation and got “alarming close to the home” Karp said.

Firefighters were able to control the fire and it was safely extinguished at around 6 p.m. Karp said the barn and pumphouse were destroyed, the home was untouched and OK.

The fire's cause has yet to be determined.
