Baha’is of Port Townsend and Jefferson County celebrate the 200th birthday of the religion’s founder, Baha’u’llah, with a public gathering set for 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., Port Hadlock. The event is to include a screening of a new film, “Light of the World,” which tells the story of Baha’u’llah’s life and station.

The Baha’i faith, founded in Iran in 1844, is the youngest of the world’s independent monotheistic religions and the second-most-widespread religion in the world. It now has more than 5 million adherents in 236 countries and territories, according to a press release.

Its founder, Baha’u’llah (1817-1892), is regarded by Baha’is as the most recent in the line of messengers of God, which stretches back beyond recorded time and includes Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Krishna, Zoroaster, Christ and Muhammad. Baha’is believe in one God; the oneness of humankind; independent investigation of the truth; the essential harmony of science and religion; the equality of men and women; the elimination of prejudice of all kinds; and spiritual solutions to economic problems, according to a press release.
