7/15/2009 6:00:00 AM Letter: New emergency cardiac protocol saves lives
On June 26, my 88-year-old father had a heart attack. We called the paramedics as soon as we realized what was happening and they quickly arrived at his home in Kala Point. He was treated in the ambulance with a new emergency protocol that resulted in his complete recovery after he received a new stent to repair a 90 percent blockage (See "'Clot buster' brings help for hearts," Leader, June 24).
We found out later that he was the first resident of Jefferson County to benefit from an innovative new emergency protocol relating to rapid response to cardiac events. Many lives will be saved under this new protocol because of the conviction and leadership of Vic Dirksen, executive director of Jefferson Healthcare, and Gordon Pomeroy, vice chief of East Jefferson Fire Rescue, as well as a large group of professionals whose names we do not know.
Our family wishes to extend its sincere appreciation and gratitude to the group of paramedics and healthcare professionals who provided such stellar medical treatment. Our community is extremely fortunate to have access to an emergency procedure for cardiac victims that will ensure the best possible chances of survival. In deep appreciation to all of those who participated in the successful effort to implement this new life-saving strategy for Jefferson County residents,
