Demolition of the front 18 feet of the former Port Townsend Lumber building on Sims Way near Kearney Street in Port Townsend began last week.
The developer of the property, Nicholson Properties, is renovating the building and creating a larger parking area to accommodate up to four tenants, including Hollywood Video. When the remodeling is complete, the building is to be 11,520 square feet.
A group known as Stop Hollywood Video had tried to discourage the video giant from coming here because of concerns that it could lead to the closing of established local businesses such as the adjacent video store, Movies Plus. Others have written letters saying that Hollywood Video should not be treated differently from any other business.
The City of Port Townsend does not require any special permits for the project. However, the city is requiring that access via the public right of way to the parking spaces in front of Movies Plus be retained, as requested by the owner of that property, Dennis McGuire.
