The Port Townsend Bicycle Association's popular bicycling maps of East Jefferson and East Clallam counties have been revised and updated. The maps are available without charge at sporting goods and bicycle shops and visitors' centers throughout Jefferson, Clallam, Mason and Island counties, as well as locations in Seattle and Victoria. They are also posted, in printable format, on the PTBA website, www.ptbikes.org.
The first-edition maps were published in 2005, and with this second edition, 60,000 maps have been produced for free distribution. The map project is funded with support from WSDOT Highways and Local Programs, Jefferson County, Clallam County and the Peninsula Regional Transportation Planning Organization, using Federal Enhancement Grant funds for bicycle and pedestrian safety education.
The maps show information useful to bicyclists so that they can choose the routes that best suit their skill levels. The maps include both roads and trails, and show features such as high or low traffic, shoulder width, hazards such as rumble strips, and bike shop locations.
Local cycling advocate and map guru David McCulloch, who shepherded the project, says that the new maps reflect both changes in road conditions and the addition of new bike trails since the last edition of the maps. The Clallam County map shows the new Olympic Discovery Trail Adventure Route and the new additions to the ODT, which is mostly paved from Blyn through Port Angeles. The Jefferson County map shows the section of the Larry Scott Memorial Trail that is currently being built from the SR 20 bridge to Discovery Road.
PTBA can mail single copies of the maps, upon request, for a fee of $2 to cover shipping and handling. Send requests to PTBA Maps, P.O. Box 681, Port Townsend, WA 98368.
