Patience Rogge of Port Townsend has been awarded a lifetime membership in the Washington Library Association, and her name has been added to the American Library.
Association/American Library Trustee Association (ALA/ALTA) National Advocacy Honor Roll. She received these honors for her work as a library trustee for the Jefferson County Library and for her work as an advocate for libraries statewide. Rogge served as a library board trustee for the last 11 years.
This past spring, Rogge was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the Washington Library Association. While a trustee for Jefferson County Library, Rogge was active both locally and statewide. On the local level, Rogge initiated a regular program of trustee education, mentored new board members, developed a new category of trustee emeritus to ensure the continued involvement of retired trustees, and continues to encourage trustee involvement in Washington Library Association and statewide professional and political activities.
“During her tenure and thanks, in part, to her political leadership, Jefferson County Library has grown and prospered and professionalized its services,” said library Director Ray Serebrin.
This award also recognizes her broader service to the Washington Library Association. It is this work that led to her most recent award as an ALA/ALTA Honor Roll member.
She was chosen by the state of Washington as “one of the extraordinary library advocates of the past five years.” She was nominated for this honor by the Washington State Library for her many advocacy efforts, including articles she wrote for the Washington State Public Library Trustee Manual and her work as chair of Grassroots, the state library advocacy group which helped keep the state library open when Gov. Locke’s administration wanted to close the library due to budget constraints. She also helped plan numerous programs for state library conferences and has recently become active in the Washington Coalition for Open Government. In that role, she testified at a Senate Government Operations Committee hearing in support of Senate Bill 6005, which provides for electronic preservation of state publications. Rogge also serves on the board of the Friends of the Washington State Library.
Her name will be added to the ALA/ALTA National Advocacy Honor Roll. Its purpose is to identify and celebrate those individuals and groups who have actively supported and strengthened library services at the local, state or national levels. Rogge was one of the three advocates chosen for Washington state. She and other newly appointed honor roll members will be celebrated at an awards banquet at the national American Library Association Meeting in Chicago this month.

We are so blessed in this community to have a woman of patience, skill and dedication to continue to promote literacy. We hope she will continue to support education as the youth of our communtiy continues to struggle to get the quality education they're entitled to in an era of declining enrollment and infrastructure challanges.
