Carl started his business ventures in Port Townsend. He had a bakery, a small restaurant known as Smitty’s Burger House on the Marina. He also operated the Port Townsend Mill Cafeteria under Crown Zellerbach for years. Carl purchased a small restaurant in 1983 in Discovery Bay formerly known as Curly’s Place, which is now known as Fat Smitty’s.

Carl will be missed by many of his long-term friends, business relationships, patrons and employees throughout the years. Carl enjoyed coaching football, racing cars, fishing and working his restaurant so he could socialize with his patrons.
