Happy Halloween! May all your treats be free of tricks. 

BJ and I encountered Celeste Archambault down at the convenience store last week. Celeste proceeded to entertain (?) us with some of the most groan-worthy jokes we have heard in years. (What do you call a cheesy monster dance? A Munster Mash. Yes, that is a bat joke.) 

She confessed she enjoys telling them to her grandchildren. Why she felt compelled to tell them to us escapes all rational thought. Of course, we can come home and get similar, maybe better, humor from Alexa! 

BJ noted that Celeste had been in the post office, mailing Halloween greetings to her grandchildren in orange envelopes. Is this town full of great people or what?

High school football

We went to the football game between Chimacum and Port Townsend high schools last Friday at Memorial Field in Port Townsend, and it was scary. The final score, 79-51, should give you a hint that it might have looked a lot like a tennis match with the teams going back and forth scoring touchdown after touchdown. There were more than 1,000 yards of total offense, and if you don’t already know, that is a lot. 

It was fun to watch even though BJ noted the defense for both teams might have needed a little work. 

The Monon Bell Game is coming up on Nov.  10, and it will be the 125th football game between my alma mater, the Wabash College Little Giants (7-1), and BJ’s alma mater, the DePauw Tigers (4-3). DePauw has had its problems recently, having lost eight of the last 10 Monon Bell games, but the Little Giants lead the series 61-54-9, and that shows it's been pretty competitive throughout the years. 

Terry Umbreit is another noteworthy DePauw alumnus, and we may travel together to the annual Monon Bell Game party at the Ram at Northgate. The former Washington State University professor is currently basking in the glow of the success of the Cougars, who sit atop Pac-12 North standings. 

Not so glowing is the record of the DePauw Tigers. 

Pot O' Gold

Veterans Day event

There will be a nice Veterans Day event at the Beach Club on Sunday, Nov. 11. The North Bay Lot Owners Association will be serving coffee and dessert from 2 to 4 p.m. It should be a good way to get and give appreciation to local veterans.

Political signs

Election Day is next week. What a season it has been. I actually drove by a house in Port Townsend that had signs for both candidates for the same office. It was a fine joke, or somebody is confused.
