The Kiwanis Club of Port Townsend had a great May with all of the Rhody Festival activities.  The festival really showcased what Kiwanis is all about: it’s “For The Kids!” (and the community, too).

Scholarships totalling $25,000 from the Kiwanis club were proudly awarded this week at all three high schools in eastern Jefferson County. An additional $5,000 will be awarded for a continuing scholarship this summer. The application will be available on washboard.org in mid-July.

Kiwanis is gearing up for July 7  as its the date for the club’s annual Christmas in July Tiki Party & Silent Auction at the Port Townsend Legion Post #26.

This event helps to fund the club’s Toys for Tots program and the local Christmas for Children.  The event goes from 6 to 11 p.m. and features Freddy Pink, one of the most popular dance bands in the Northwest. This is a 21-and-over event providing a fabulous auction of local and international experiences and items, the third annual Ugliest Hawaiian Shirt Contest and a specialty tropical drink offering.  Contact a Kiwanian for ticket information.

If you’re a classic car owner and love to show off your hard work, please put the date of the club’s annual Kiwanis Classic Car Show on your calendar on Aug. 25 at Jefferson County Memorial Athletic Field in Port Townsend.

The Car Show is a major fundraiser for all of the youth activities in the area. Registration materials were mailed to past participants last month.  For more information, call 916-626-2981.

Many of the Kiwanis Club members will be volunteering with Camp Beausite Northwest again this summer for five weeks during July and August.

Camp Beausite is a major emphasis for the club; a beautiful place in the Chimacum valley where adults and children with disabilities have an opportunity to spend a week at camp doing fun activities in which they do not normally get to be involved, such as horseback-riding, a picnic at the beach with rides on the Kiwanis Choo Choo, swimming at Mountain View Pool, a talent show and crafts.

There are always fun things going on with the Port Townsend Kiwanis Club. We’re looking forward to our projects coming in the fall and winter. More to come on those in the future.

We stay busy and have loads of fun together. You can certainly join us … there’s lots of room for people interested in serving our communities.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. It’s easy to obtain information about the club by visiting the website at www.ptkiwanis.org or send an email to porttownsendkiwanis@gmail. com. The club also welcomes businesses/organizations/individuals to present a 15-20-minute program during the weekly meeting.
