It was a week highlighted by returning performers Stephanie and Paolo at the pianos for the inaugural Port Ludlow Performing Arts program. Music of a different sort was at the Jewel Box Theatre in Poulsbo for “Always Patsy,” a tribute to the songs of Patsy Cline. However, it seems like this time for all of us may hold some beer, brats and football.

Last Saturday was the annual Brewfest organized by the group preparing backpacks with weekend food for children in the Chimacum School District who might not have enough available otherwise. The general consensus at my table was that this was at least the fourth year of the event and again several breweries plus Finnriver Cidery were in the Bay Club offering their products to go with the available brats and cupcakes. The community came out in force for this celebration of fall on a Saturday with much crisp fall sunshine. I saw lots of folks from Port Ludlow as well as some folks from out of town. Karen Jensen, one of the original organizers of the event passed away recently but her fun spirit pervaded the event. Even more testimony for the fun of the event can be derived from the presence of “crack” PT Leader reporter Kirk Boxleitner who may provide a different perspective on the event elsewhere in this week’s paper.

And then there is football. Unfortunately the Cowboys of Chimacum have yet to come into their own. They have a 1-5 record so far. However, for those waiting for my reporting of the progress being made by both the Wabash College Little Giants and the DePauw Tigers there is good news. Wabash is currently sitting on a 4-1 record and DePauw barely holds a winning record at 3-2. The two teams play the annual Monon Bell Classic at Wabash this year on November 10. If you need tickets they go on sale on October 15. Those of you not quite so familiar with football in the state of Indiana must also remember that Notre Dame is also in the Hoosier State. In fact, before the season started the Indianapolis Star ranked the top 50 football games in the state for this fall. The Monon Bell Game ranked number 8, right ahead of Notre Dame and Florida State! (I couldn’t believe it either.)

And then, there are the Seahawks. There is a team racked with all kinds of problems. As a result, I am the guy wandering around town with the old Kansas City Chiefs hat on. The Chiefs hold a gaudy record of 5-0, unlike the Seahawks at 2-3. (My friend Don Baker and probably others, refer to the Seattle team as the “Seachickens”.) The Chiefs are a fun team to watch, even if you are not much of a fan. BJ and I lived in the KC area for a long time and the fans living there would not agree that the 12s of the Seahawks have any cheering advantage over them.

So, combining football and the beer of recent politics, I am reminded of a quote from Eugene McCarthy. “Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it’s important.”
