A book and some Rotary stuff

Posted

If you were ever in a book club, (or will be), “you have seen this movie.” Heck, I saw it in my high school English class! BJ is in a club with 7-8 other women. They meet monthly to discuss a book and get everybody on board with the next one. This past month the book was not headed for a Pulitzer Prize as proven by the fact that only one of the members actually slogged through the whole book and she finished it because she was the host and felt an obligation. I started to read the same book a couple of years ago based on a recommendation from my son-in-law. I only made it through about 25 percent of it. NO, I will not provide the book’s name because it will only cause the occasional erudite reader of this column to publicly note my lack of appreciation for the finer literary works in this world.

Had a nice drive to Gig Harbor last weekend for some training for Rotary Youth Exchange Officers. I am one of them. Caleb Summerfelt, Paul Wynkoop, Terry Umbreit and I attended the session and are ready to make the program sing with the outbound student, (Chile), the Inbound student, (Netherlands), and the student’s host families. Paul noted that he and Terry rode to/from Gig Harbor with me driving. He said it like his safety might have been In question. The Youth Exchange program is one of the most rewarding programs available through your local Rotary clubs in Port Townsend or Port Hadlock.

Rotary club member Stephen Porter announced several grants the club made to local organizations needing some help. Since the Rotary year runs from July 1 through June 30, it was nice to see the year start with such generosity. Recipients included the Port Townsend Chorus requesting help paying for training of the new conductor. Citizens for Safe Schools also received a grant supporting efforts to get a basic survival kit in the hands of every school child. Finally, the Backpacks for Kids program supporting good nutrition for school children was given a grant to support their efforts acquiring and distributing food.

Ah yes, another day at Active Life for anther battle with my sciatica. As always, if you want to see your friends, just stop in. Last week it was Claudia Wicks and Sharon Storm. Just think if Active Life had the same policy as Starbucks, you know, “come on in, you don’t need to buy anything.” Let me tell you, they would need a bigger lobby!

I suppose you got your ballot last week as we did. I was impressed with the number of candidates. The only place you can find more names are on the political signs popping up on every corner. Did you notice the number of people running for US Senate! Wow! The truth is, I think I have also seen a couple of those folks at Active Life.

Love a curmudgeon and have a great week.
