'Hayloft Sweethearts' invoked by local musicians

Vintage country music in an old time radio show format will be featured at the Key City Public Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m.

Skyland Scotty Wiseman, a prolific composer, and his wife Lulu Belle performed on the WLS Barn Dance radio show out of Chicago from 1934-1958. Both were born in the Big Smokey Mountains of North Carolina, but didn’t meet until the Barn Dance, where their romance and marriage were widely celebrated.

Known as “The Hayloft Sweethearts,” the Wisemans used homespun humor and wholesome, catchy songs to launch a career that lasted over three decades. “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You,” which Scotty wrote, is their biggest hit.

As fate would have it, Scotty is Michael Townsend’s uncle by marriage, and Townsend grew up seeing old promotional photos and hearing stories about the country duo playing at family gatherings. When Vickie, Townsend's wife and longtime music partner, found the sheet music to “Have I Told You Lately…” at a local rummage sale, the Townsends began to seek out Scotty Wiseman’s songs in earnest. They found a vintage songbook from the 1940s with more than 70 tunes and they plan to share the best of these in their Oct. 19 show.

“Some of Scotty’s songs are corny and fun, but many are heartfelt, even tragic,” said Townsend. “We’ll try to honor the legacy with stories about hard times, train wrecks, and whistlin’ women.”

The Townsends played with the trio Beatnik Zydeco and have hosted previous shows at KCPT, including Murder Ballads, Hell & Heaven and Talking Stick. Country crooners Doug Warren and Brian “Buck” Ellard and songbird Sally Chapin join them in this celebration of old time radio. Master of ceremonies is theater ace David Schroeder, who may sell some patent medicine on the side.

Join "The Hayloft Sweethearts" and guests at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19 at Key City Public Theatre, 419 Washington St. Tickets are $15.
