Water.

We travel by it, refresh ourselves with it and gain energy source from it.

Opening on Saturday, April 10 is a new exhibit titled “The Shape of Water,” presented by the Port Townsend Arts Commission (PTAC) and the Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC), an exhibition of visual art and poetry that investigates the formal qualities of water and looks at how living by the water shapes culture and our behavior. An opening celebration and artists’ reception at the Maritime Center takes place from 6 to 8 p.m., with musicians Michael and Vickie Townsend providing a program of sea songs. The exhibit runs through June 30.

“The Shape of Water” features poetry, paintings, photography, sculpture and multimedia that speak to one’s relationship and response to water, and includes works from more than 50 artists and poets residing in East Jefferson County. The large number and high quality of the works are a wonderful celebration of the wealth of talent that resides in our community as well as a testament to the deeply inspiring effect water has on creative imaginations.

In celebration of April being National Poetry Month, the PTAC will circulate selected “Shape of Water” poems at various locations throughout Port Townsend. A poetry reading by poets who have work included in the exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the meeting rooms of the Maritime Center.

Collaboration across organizations was a major impetus for the development of this exhibition. In addition to working with the NWMC to mount the physical exhibition, PTAC has benefited from its partnership with Jefferson County Community Foundation, and gives thanks to Centrum for loan and assistance of included artwork. It also was honored by the Washington State Arts Commission with a generous grant through its Grants to Organizations program, which partially funds the exhibition.

In addition to the physical exhibition, a virtual exhibition, “Shape of Water II,” is also presented on Port Townsend’s Virtual Art Museum (VAM), a project developed with PTAC support at porttownsendvirtualartmuseum.org. “Shape of Water II” not only serves to archive the works presented in the live exhibition, but includes additional works that also resonate with the theme.

The Northwest Maritime Center is located at 431 Water St.
