The 18th annual Art Port Townsend Studio Tour runs this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 27-28. This year's tour features 32 artists' studios throughout greater Port Townsend.
Studio tour offers a rare opportunity to "see inside" the life of a working artist, and to grow a deeper understanding of the complex processes used to make art.
Detailed tour maps with information on each featured artist are available online at
artporttownsend.org, at the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center, 2409 Jefferson St., or at tour sponsor Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., downtown. Admission to all tour locations is free.
Northwind Executive Director Michael D'Alessandro says the tour offers the public a chance to dive deeper into the artwork, noting that the event is "not just focused on sales, but on methods, materials and the processes of how artists do their work." It's a perfect example of Northwind's mission statement in action: "connecting arts and community."
Northwind Board President Jeanette Best has been involved with the tour since it began in 1999, and is once again the organizer. The event is supported in part by the Port Townsend Arts Commission and the Washington State Arts Commission.
The 2016 Studio Tour artist lineup includes artists working in a broad cross-section of media and genres, from metal sculpture to vibrant oil pantings to delicate watercolors to an incredible variety of mixed media. These professional artists open their studios for demonstrations and displays of their work, answering questions about their methods and tools. Student artists are especially encouraged on the tour, although some studios may not be suitable for very young children.
New to the tour this year is the participation of the Port Townsend School of the Arts, showcasing its facility at the Fort Worden Lifelong Learning Center and offering fine arts classes for children and adults.
