One piece to be displayed during this weekend’s Northwind Arts Center’s Studio Tour will be the Sense of Place sculpture. As part of the Washington State 1 Percent  for Art project, the collage will be installed at Ocosta Elementary School in Cohassett Beach the last week of August.

According to a press release, the Sense of Place from David Eisenhour, the Port Hadlock resident who put together the project, it is comprised of 16 cast bronze forms all representative of the local marine environment. These include shell fragments, seaweed, carapaces of nearshore creatures, and a single piece representing the basalt of the south jetty at the entrance to Grays Harbor.

Sense of Place will be displayed at Eisenhour’s studio as part of the tour, at 220 Curtiss St., Port Hadlock.

Studios from Chimacum to Fort Worden will be open for public perusing on Aug. 17 through Aug. 18. Similar to other tours, Northwind Arts Center is in its 20th year of running the event. Jeanette Best, the founder of Northwind Arts Center, started the event as a way for artists to engage with the community, as well as connect with buyers and collectors.

“The idea for ours is that an artist would open their home studio or wherever they worked … hold demonstrations and talk about their work,” said Executive Director Michael D’Alessandro. He went on to say that it was an avenue to educate the community, a key part of the nonprofit’s mission. The tour is sandwiched between tours on Whidbey and Bainbridge island’s events, hoping to gain the same traction.

Mediums on display include photography, ceramics, encaustic, oil painting, sculpting, pottery, and jewelry. Any tourists who wish to know where to go should stop by Northwind Arts Center for a brochure to pick up a brochure to know where each studio is located as a guide for its self-guided tour.

Writers who attended the Tuesday, Aug. 7 Ekphrastic event will have the opportunity to share what their inspiration of specific works of art came out in word form. They will gather on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Northwind Arts Center.

Next Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. a Songwriters Showcase will feature the music of Dan Weber and Matt Sircely. As an award-winning songwriter, Weber appeared to the festival scene in 2010 and has toured around the country. Sircley is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter and has been living in the Olympic Mountains as an independent journalist. He can be best known for his work as a founding member of Hot Club Sandwich.
