Modest Mouse floats on

Modest Mouse came with all the bells and whistles, nearly literally.

For a two-day stay on Aug. 24 and 25 at the Fort Worden McCurdy Pavilion, each of the two audiences were treated to two different set lists by the Issaquah-based band. The band performed their recognizable “Dashboard” the first night, while opting to plat the showstopper “Float On” the second.

Regardless of the choice in songs, those who came out to the concert were asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets, but the majority opted to stand to take in the songs.

A full stage of instruments and instrumentalists allowed the band to take their time with each song, as intros and breakdowns were like a garage jam session, but with more coordination between every one of the seven members. Each came with their own set of instruments, interchanging on a needed basis.

Isaac Brock, Modest Mouse founder, lead singer and guitarist, changed out his electric for a banjo and acoustic guitar when the occasion arose. Three percussionists filled the back stage, each with their own responsibilities, whether using a Tinkertoy or lending the traditional drum beat. The band's other members also lent to the wall of sound, whether it was on violin, stand-up bass or keyboard.
