KCPT Variety Show

Lumbard and Coates Variety Show will be presented Thursday and Friday by Key City Public Theatre, steered by Caleb Lumbard and Ian Coats, along with special musical guest Declan Goldenbogen.

Both Port Townsend natives have been involved in Key City Public Theatre at early ages. Lumbard played the part of Donald Trump in last year’s “Promposal,” Earl of Douglas in “Henry IV Part 1” and Greg in “The Medicine Hate Playwright’s Festival,” the 2018 Teen Initiative. He currently takes on the role of Guildenstern in this season’s production of “Hamlet.” Coates was also in “Promposal” and “The Medicine Hate Playwright’s Festival” and has produced at Key City Public Theatre. He is a student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, where he has had his own plays performed and as far north as Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

Featuring original sketches, stand-up comedy, and music, the variety show will benefit Key City Public Theatre’s Teen Initiative Program. Both Lumbard and Coates have participated in the Teen Initiative, leading them to want to perform to benefit the program moving forward.

The shows will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and 23. Tickets are $15 for each performance, $12 for students at the box office at 419 Washington St. and Pay-What-You-Wish at the door.

One-Act competition deadline nears

Playwrights have just under two weeks to submit their short scripts for the One-Act Play Competition of the 23rd Annual PT PlayFest. The deadline is Sept. 4 for any scripts to be submitted to the Port Townsend Arts Commission through mail.

Once submitted, a panel of three judges will be charged with selecting the best of the bunch and pick a combined total of 90 minutes of material. Each work picked will be produced as either staged readings or workshop productions within Key City Theatre’s 2019 festival. Once they are chosen, a live table read will allow the playwrights to hear their work aloud and give them an opportunity to refine them before rehearsal begins.

Auditions to bring the scripts to life will take place Oct. 26 and 27 during the Key City Public Theatre’s annual general auditions. Playwrights are encouraged to participate in the audition and rehearsal process.
