Renowned jazz artist Dmitri Matheny is set to perform with his band May 14 in Port Townsend as part of a national tour celebrating the international release of “Jazz Noir,” Matheny's 11th album as a band leader.

The concert showcases selections from the new album, described as “a fresh spin on crime jazz, film noir and timeless classics,” and is set for 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at Cellar Door, 940 Water St. in Port Townsend.

Highlights include familiar movie themes (“Laura,” “Chinatown,” “Vertigo,” “Taxi Driver” and “Stormy Weather”) along with jazz, blues, spoken word and more.

Flugelhornist and composer Matheny directs the Dmitri Matheny Group, which features Rickey Kelly on vibraphone, Phil Sparks on bass and Robert Rushing on drums.

Acclaimed for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, American musician Matheny has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation,” according to the International Review of Music. An honors graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then, he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”

Admission is $5 for all ages. For more information, call 385-6959 or visit
