PT Shorts presents works by Hemingway

Key City Public Theatre, in collaboration with Northwind Arts Center, presents the work of Ernest Hemingway for this month’s PT Shorts. Readings are to begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3 and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4 at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.

Canonized as one of America’s greatest writers, Hemingway wrote on themes of love, war, wilderness, loss and about living an authentic life. His writing style was famously lean, an explicit rejection of the more florid prose of his forerunners. Hemingway gained renown as a war reporter, covering the invasion of Normandy and the liberation of Paris in 1944, but his most celebrated works were in the realm of fiction.

Three stories are to be read at the event: “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” a tale of a man on the edge of death; “The Battler,” wherein a man discovers just how far one can fall; and “Hills Like White Elephants,” a story about a woman who pulls away from a relationship that has become smothering.

‘Art of Gifting’ at Red Dragonfly

Red Dragonfly’s focus for December is “The Art of Gifting: Giving the Gift of Art,” an exploration of gift giving as “more than fruit cake, slippers and knitted scarves.”

For the Dec. 3 Art Walk, Red Dragonfly is introducing new work by three artists: illustrator Kira Mardikes of Chimacum, graphic illustrator Tim Warden, and metalworker and multimedia sculptor Ephraim Brown.

Red Dragonfly is located in Port Townsend’s Undertown, down the stairs under the green iron pergola at the corner of Water and Taylor streets.

Humane Society calendar art at Spice and Tea Exchange

The Humane Society of Jefferson County is releasing a 2017 calendar featuring 12 local artists and a fine art photographer. The paintings are to be on display at the Spice and Tea Exchange, 929 Water St., for the Art Walk on Saturday, Dec. 3, with artists on hand to talk about their work from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Alaska paintings, ‘Winter White’ at Gallery 9

Painter Sandra Smith-Poling and silver jeweler Roberto Ribeiro are the featured artists for December at Gallery 9, 1012 Water St.

Smith-Poling is showcasing her recent Alaska paintings from the Nuuciq Native Spirit Camp and Chenega Bay on Prince William Sound, Alaska. Besides painting, Smith-Poling helps her husband and fellow artist in teaching the art of building full-size Alaska native baidarkas (kayaks).

Ribeiro celebrates his 12th winter at Gallery 9 with his “Winter White” collection, a display of pearls, white topaz, cubic zirconia and silver. The pieces in this latest collection feature the artist’s signature spirals, curves and braids, along with new snowflake designs.

Meet the artists during Art Walk, 5:30-8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3.

‘Small Expressions’ at Northwind

Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., presents “Small Expressions 15” in December. The juried show of small-format art and fine crafts showcases a range of diverse media, from jewelry, painting and sculpture to ceramics, fiber, photography, printmaking and basketry from local and regional artists.

This show is to be juried by Donna Watson, a mixed-media collage artist, and a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. An opening reception during First Saturday Art Walk, 5:30-8 p.m., is followed by a talk given by Watson at 1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 4.

‘Wine and sign’ authors event at Writers’ Workshoppe

The Writers’ Workshoppe and Imprint Books is set to host more than a dozen local prose writers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. during Art Walk at the downtown bookshop, 820 Water St.

“Please come, sip wine, meet many of your local authors and have them sign their books,” said Anna Quinn, owner of the Writers’ Workshoppe and Imprint Books. “It will be a wonderful way to celebrate the brilliant authors in our town. We’re hosting prose writers in December and our amazing local poets in April for National Poetry Month.”

The writers slated to attend are Kaci Cronkhite, Daniella Chace, Rikki Ducornet, Wren Farris, Richard Glaubman, Adrianne Harun, Betsy Howell, Leigh Hearon, Julie Christine Johnson, Patrick Jennings, Louise Marley, Terry Persun, Barbara Sjoholm, Kathryn Wadsworth and Curtis White.

“We love supporting the writing community in Port Townsend,” said Quinn. “This ‘wine and sign’ event will give everyone an opportunity to give signed copies of your favorite local writer’s books as gifts this holiday season.”
