Hadlock Days mower racers honored

The riding lawnmowers at Hadlock Days are sleepers. Even though they don't get above third gear on the track, that's still enough power to hit speeds of about 40 mph.

The third year of racing at Hadlock Days - this year on what organizers said is the best lawnmower race track in the Pacific Northwest - attracted 42 contestants.

Gerald Anderson of Chilliwack, B.C., took home the $100 prize for the fastest track time over the weekend, reaching almost 40 mph with a lap time of 11 minutes, 44 seconds.

Neither heat nor gas prices could keep a full house from moving in to Port Hadlock during this year's 19th Hadlock Days festival. More than 42 lawnmower racers, 53 vendors, 48 parade entries and 70 show cars participated in the three-day event, not to mention the hundreds of spectators.

The main event, the lawnmower races, had its maiden voyage at the new oval track off D Street. Spectators sat above the pit on grandstands, away from dust and careening mowers that found their way off the track every few minutes. An "old timer" race was staged for the first time.

After numerous wrecks, a lost wheel and some close calls, the worst injury was a dislocated shoulder. See mower race results on page B 7.

Event organizers said some vendors voiced concerns over the spread-out locations of venues, an issue that will be addressed prior to next year's festival.
